Black Humphrey Rock
Original Contemporary Cornish Newquay Cliffs Landscape Painting
By Cornish Artist Diane Griffiths
Black Humphrey was a notorious Newquay smuggler, said to live at Black Humphrey Rock which is found on Whipsiderry Beach near Porth, Newquay. It’s a fascinating shape and quite an icon in an area where the cliffs and coastline are already very dramatic. I love the sky in this painting; it’s turbulent and slightly stormy but there is a light bouncing off the cliffs, lighting up the foreground.
