Newquay Fistral Painting

This view, from just outside the Headland Hotel, looking across Fistral towards Pentire is one of my favourites. The vast multi-coloured sky dances above you in an array of moasic light and texture. It’s a warm, soft light of late afternoon and after an enjoyable morning on the beach it’s time to chill out and relax with an afternoon tea watching the world go by.

Caring for your Artwork

Lifting and carrying

Always use two hands when lifting or carrying your artwork, holding it by one hand can stress your painting by putting pressure in one place. Never lean the front or back surface of a canvas on a sharp object, it doesn’t matter how small it is, it doesn’t even have to be that sharp, it will leave a dent.

Temperature and humidity fluctuation damage

Rooms that often have doors or windows opened to the outside or any areas next to heat sources; radiators or fireplaces may suffer from fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Kitchens, bathrooms, attics or basements are often unsuitable for hanging art.

Light damage

We all know that UV light in sunlight is damaging to our skin, it’s also damaging to artwork. Light can fade pigments and cause discolouration. Ensure that the art will not be exposed to direct sunlight. I also wouldn’t recommend using ‘picture lights’, they tend to over-light the art and the local heat that the light produces can be damaging.

Cleaning

Dust a canvas using a soft cloth, this should be done frequently to ensure you don’t get a thin layer settling on the canvas. Never use polish or use chemical products to do this. When cleaning the glass with paper artwork underneath, never spray glass cleaner directly on a frame or glass covering a painting.
