Red Sky Over Pentire
Original Contemporary Cornish Landscape Painting by Cornish Artist Diane Griffiths.
Acrylic and enamel on Gerstaecker cotton canvas with painted sides, 50x50cm/20×20″ (2017).
After a relaxing walk along Pentire the sun disappeared behind the clouds and I was a little disappointed that we weren’t going to see the sun set below the horizon. However my disappointment was premature – the clouds lit up with reds, oranges and yellows, I wasn’t the only one getting my camera out to take a photo!
After sharing my photo I had a request to paint this beautiful sky, which at first I was a little apprehensive about – I usually paint with photographs as reference – but it was such a stunning sky I wasn’t sure I would do it justice.
However once I started I found that it was really enjoyable to paint – mixing up the dark and bright colours to build up the contrast, I was really pleased with the final result, particularly how the reds flow across the sky.
Here’s to more Cornish sunsets!
I use Gerstaecker Stretched Canvases 100% cotton; 380gsm, with no side tacking and are primed with a semi-absorbent universal primer.
Daler Rowney Acrylic System 3 original acrylic paint are the acrylics of my choice; I use a mixture of acrylic and enamel paints in my artwork.
