This impressive six-storey building is covered in 15,000 aluminium discs creating a unique undulating effect akin to the sequins of a dress flowing around the building. It was designed by Future Systems and cost £60m to build. It opened as part of the redeveloped Bullring Shopping Centre in 2003. Growing up in Staffordshire just north of Birmingham I’m fond of visiting it and see how it’s developed over the last few decades.
This was the photo I used as part of my inspiration for this painting. This fluidity of shape was a challenge to paint, but I had a stunning evening photo of Selfridges lit up in a purple/pink and really wanted this view to add to my collection of paintings ‘The Colour of Night’. A collection which explores how natural and man-made light can transform a landscape; Dialling up colours normally unusual to that landscape, taking advantage of light and shadow to create something magical.
